Swindon Liberal Democrat Chair speaks out against Swindon MPs' refusal to help refugee children

Alex Hegenbarth, Chair of the Swindon Liberal Democrats, has spoken out against local MPs Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland (for North Swindon and South Swindon respectively) on their decision to vote against the plan to bring 3,000 unaccompanied children from European refugee camps to the UK.

Alex said: “Across Europe thousands of these children are frightened and alone and being forced to sleep on roadsides, in ditches and under whatever small shelter they can find. These children are at constant risk of physical and sexual exploitation and we had the chance to save them from their fate.”

“We had the opportunity to show that Swindon cares and our MPs, who are meant to represent us, have let us down.”

While five Conservative MPs  voted for the motion, the motion was rejected by 294 to 276 votes.
